Getting Married to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has experienced very difficult moments being a part of the Royal Family. The response and behavior of everyone towards Meghan had been quite different than it always has been with Kate Middleton. Either it is due to Meghan’s being the first member of color in the family or her way of life, Meghan has always faced intense criticism and it has hardly ever been a justified one.
Social media has been bursting with rumors about the couple since the very beginning of their lives. Meghan was the most trolled person in the year 2019 in the entire world.
The couple recently appeared on The Teen Therapy podcast for an interview, where Meghan shared her feelings in response to the reactions she faced from social media & the public despite being on maternity leave for most time of the year. She said:
“I’m told that in 2019 I was the most trolled person in the entire world—male or female. Now, eight months of that I wasn’t even visible. I was on maternity leave or with a baby but was able to just be manufactured and churned out. It’s almost unsurvivable. That’s so big you can’t even think of what that feels like, because I don’t care if you’re 15 or you’re 25, if people are saying things about you that aren’t true, what that does to your mental and emotional health is so damaging.”
It was not just that she was being judged on every little act she was doing. Previously after the birth of their first-born son Archie, Meghan & Prince Harry gave an interview to ITV, whereupon asking about if she was doing okay, Meghan replied that she was not feeling okay. This comment by Meghan took a spike in social media, & no one even gave a thought that she was saying it out of the exhaustion of being a new mother who had a four-month-old child she was breastfeeding. The statement was just a response to those mixed feelings she had being a tired mother at that present moment & not about anything related to her role as a member of the Royal Family.
Meghan whilst clarifying that statement of hers in a recent podcast said:
“I was in a moment of vulnerability because I was tired because there was no presentation. It was just, here’s where I am: I’m a mom with a four-and-a-half month-old baby and we are tired.”
“Between every official engagement, I was running back to make sure our son was fed.”
Whilst talking about the impact of social media on mental health in the same interview with Teen Therapy Podcast, Meghan said:
“Yes it’s a great way to connect, but it also ends up being a place where there’s a lot of disconnection.”
Recently Meghan appeared as a speaker for Fortune, where she talked about how she feels about not being on social media with the associate editor Emma Hinchliffe. During the discussion, Meghan mentioned that she quit social media for a long time & for her the addiction to social media is just like the addiction to drugs.
“I’ve made a personal choice to not have any account, so I don’t know what’s out there, and many ways that’s helpful for me. I have a lot of concerns for people that have become obsessed with it. And it is so much a part of our daily culture for so many people that it’s an addiction like many others. And there are very few things in this world where you call the person who’s engaging with it a user. But if you look at social media and what it’s doing in the same capacity in which it does creating addiction, what is the comp there? People who are addicted to drugs are called users and people who are on social media are called users. And there is something algorithmically that is in there that is creating this obsession that I think is very unhealthy for a lot of people.”
Meghan was only using the official account that was being managed by the Royal team, & after she & Prince Harry has left the duty of being Royal Seniors, she says they are no longer associated with that account as well.
Continuing her discussion with Fortune, she also said:
“I don’t think people have even started to scratch the surface on what this is doing to us and I wish more for especially the younger generation of women. You have the power to turn this around.”
Well, based on the past few years and the social grind that Meghan Markle had to face, just because she married a Royal Prince, we must admit that Social media has been hard on Meghan Markle. All the statements made by her on the social media depict nothing but a very rightful meaning for someone who is facing a lot of bash for just being right, A wife & a mother.
Undoubtedly social media has had a wonderful impact on businesses & the information world, We must admit that we all need to learn to be empathetic towards others before commenting or writing about them. If someone is a celebrity or a Royal person, still it does not give anyone a right to troll them or make them suffer mentally.
We wish the Royal Couple a very happy life & we wish social media will start becoming empowering and appreciative rather than choosing to judge others without having full insight into their lives.
